Anu‘s work is a response to the act of listening to music, sounds that you can not only hear but feel, deep electronic sounds rushing out from the speakers. The simplicity of line and colour in her forms and, in particular, the ivory shapes on black backgrounds, evoke a visual rhythm and reflect, for her, the essence of music. Coupled with this is Anu's desire to produce strong, yet soft, glassware for modern homes. Anu has successfully distilled the essential Scandinavian aesthetics - simplicity of form and line - and brought to this a thorough consideration of the element of colour. The combination of black and ivory is expanded beyond expectation as she successfully utilises both sides of the vessel to create change as a subtle continuum. This adds an exciting element to the work as a whole and reflects upon Anu's European approach whilst demonstrating a strong indigenous African and Aboriginal influence of patterning and colour. Each piece represents a challenge in the technique of overlaying the black colour over the ivory and carving the different configurations to bring maximum impact within the constraint of the two colours.
Anu was born in Helsinki, Finland and began her studies in 1996 at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. During this time, Anu was an exchange student at the University of Sunderland School of Art in Great Britain as well as at the Canberra School of Art. She returned to the Canberra School of Art to finish her Honours degree and now lives and works in Finland. Anu has exhibited her work widely in Australia, Europe and Asia.
